How Maine’s gas taxes compare with all the other states

Tax Foundation put together this map of gas taxes for each state (click on the image for a larger view). It shows that Maine ranks towards the middle of the pack — it’s the 22nd highest — with 30.01 cents in state taxes and fees per gallon of gasoline.

Compare that with the highest, Pennsylvania, with 51.60 cents per gallon. Alaska has the fewest taxes and fees, with only 12.25 cents per gallon.

The data come from the American Petroleum Institute, which standardized all the different ways states tax fuel in order to compare them.

Gas in Maine is currently around $2.72 a gallon, according to GasBuddy.
