This map shows where in Maine the most cases of STDs are reported

The Lewiston-Auburn region has the highest rate of reported sexually transmitted diseases among the state’s metro areas, based on this Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report for 2013.

The website rentapplication.com (everyone’s a content producer now) crunched the data for the map above, which includes cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis reported to the CDC. The site only mapped data for cities that have “a significant amount of population,” which obviously omits a huge swath of the state.

The site compared the states by calculating the rate of STDs per 100,000 people.

The Lewiston-Auburn area had 553.857 reported cases of STDS per 100,000 people, which reflects 596 total reports — the vast majority of which were chlamydia.

The Bangor and Portland-South Portland areas, meanwhile, each had around 304 cases per 100,000 people.

But those areas don’t even come close to cracking the list of the top 100 worst cities for STD cases.

The highest rate belongs to Montgomery, AL, with 1899.20 cases per 100,000 people. And the 100th highest, Fort Polk South, LA, had 846.498.

This analysis doesn’t capture the full extent of STDs in the country. Not everyone with one of those three diseases is diagnosed. And others — like herpes and HPV — “are not routinely reported to CDC,” the agency said.
