The U.S. Census’s annual American Community Survey asks a bunch of questions about the daily lives of its respondents, including where they were born and what they do for work.
Business Insider focused on those two variables in this map showing the most common job per state among people born outside of the US. The site used data from the Minnesota Population Center’s Integrated Public Use Microdata Series from 2013.
For Maine, the answer is college professors.
Construction worker, housekeeper and cook are the most common jobs in several other states. A majority of immigrants who responded to the survey in Michigan, Ohio and Missouri said they were also college professors.
Agricultural worker is the most cited job in the Pacific Northwest and California. In the farmland of Nebraska and Iowa, it’s butcher.
